Three weeks after the earthquake that struck Cali, four families who lost their homes received the keys to their new residences in the Vegas del Lili neighborhood, thanks to a donation from Constructora Marval, in coordination with the Cali Mayor’s Office and the National Government.
The apartments were handed over fully furnished and are ready for the families to move in starting tomorrow, once the respective contracts are signed and delivered.
One of the beneficiary families is the one of Diana Marcela Troncoso Escobar, who was trapped for 30 hours following the collapse of the Torres de Limonar building, and is still recovering from injuries sustained during the earthquake. Her father, Álvaro Troncoso Torres, reflected on the journey his family has experienced since the emergency and expressed gratitude for the support received.
“It is a tremendous gift from God. First of all, the miracle of my daughter’s life, and secondly, this gift of an apartment. I want to thank Dr. Alejandro Eder; he is someone who has shown he was born for this—to serve his town and his people—and he keeps his promises.”
For the Cali Mayor’s Office, this handover is part of a broader process intended to assist the many families who lost their homes or were otherwise affected by the earthquake. Mayor Alejandro Eder stated:
“This is a vitally important first step, but let us remember that there are still thousands more families we need to assist. I want the thousands of affected families to know that we at the Mayor’s Office are working hand-in-hand with the national government to devise the necessary solutions.”
The National Government and the Cali Mayor’s Office are advancing various housing options tailored to the conditions of the affected areas.
“We are currently jointly designing three strategic models to move forward with Cali’s reconstruction. This is crucial because the vast majority—nearly 68%—of the victims or those who lost their homes are over the age of 50. We must analyze this demographic breakdown to understand that these families require guidance, backing, and support,” explained Minister of Housing Jaime Andrés Beltrán Martínez.
These options are being coordinated with the strengthening of the Materials Bank and with the technical teams responsible for assessing affected buildings to determine which can be repaired, which require reconstruction, and in which sectors urban renewal processes will be necessary.
The handover was made possible through the collaboration of the Cali Mayor’s Office, the National Government, and Constructora Marval, which donated the four apartments for the affected families.
